Girl Groups & Soul Men - Volumes 1 & 2
In 1958 The Chantels helped define what became known as the classic "Girl
Group Sound" when they scored a hit with "Maybe". Groups
of young singers teamed up with behind-the-scenes 'Brill Building' songwriters
& music producers and created hit singles, often featuring 'wall-of-sound'
production values with backing by top studio musicians. In Detroit, the
emerging Motown label followed suit with several major girl groups, beginning
with The Marvelettes & later with Martha & The Vandellas, and The
Supremes. By the early-mid 1960s the girl group sound was so popular that
many solo artists such as Leslie Gore were often considered part of the
genre. In later eras the girl group template would be applied to disco,
contemporary R&B, soul & pop.
